Coat of arms of Bedřich of Žerotín and Libuše of Lomnice from 1538-1547

Coat of arms of Bedřich of Žerotín and Libuše of Lomnice from 1538-1547

Castle

Cultural monument no. 13090 / 8-3355

A square sandstone slab measuring 120 x 120 cm walled in the forecourt of the Renaissance loggia above the entrance to the second courtyard of the castle.

The coats of arms of a married couple carved in deep relief, unusually heraldic on the right the coat of arms of the wife - in a silver shield a black eagle's wing with a golden, clover-tipped perisonium, a tourmaline helm with black and red coverts, a jewelled figure from the shield; on the left, the coat of arms of the husband - a black double-tailed crowned lion with red tongue, a tourmaline helm with golden crown and black and red coverts, a jewelled figure rising from the shield, leaping from a silver trefoil. Both coats of arms have pegged shields and, together with the Tournament helms, are slightly inverted. The plaque was restored in 2003 by academic sculptor and restorer MgA. Jakub Gajda, whereby tinctures were applied according to the traces of colour polychromy found, although in the case of the coats of arms of the Lords of Meziříčský of Lomnice they do not correspond to the historical reality.

Below the coats of arms, a one-line inscription is carved in relief: 'Lybisse Zlo[m](n)netze Bedrzich zzerotina' and 'na sstramberze pan(n) diedizny'.

Bedřich of Žerotín was the son of Peter of Žerotín and Margaret of Pernštejn. In 1533, he took over the Štramberk estate with Nový Jičín and subsequently contributed to the major rebuilding of the local manor house into a Renaissance chateau. He married Libuša of Lomnice, daughter of Václav of Lomnice na Náměšti and Braxida of Boskovice, and died in 1541. The plaque, which is attributed to the workshop circle of the so-called Master PH, is related to the reconstruction of the chateau and was created no later than 1547, when Bedřich's widow married for the second time to Bohuš Kostka of Postupice; she died on 7 August 1559 in Brandýs nad Labem.
