Funeral monuments of the town cemetery

Funeral monuments of the town cemetery

The Novojičín cemetery contains several historical landmarks: a lapidarium, 17 so-called honorary graves, 1 valuable tombstone and several objects, monuments and
statues with sacral and funeral themes. These objects date mainly from the beginning of the 20th century and, apart from their commemorative significance, are also characterised by their exceptional artistic and craft workmanship.

The award of the title of honorary grave is decided by a resolution of the Municipal Council of Nový Jičín, and the honorary graves undergo gradual rehabilitation. So far, the first tombstone has been repaired in 2018, and five tombstones in 2020 and 2024. The rehabilitation work was co-financed by the Czech-German Future Fund, a foundation fund and the City of Nový Jičín. In 2005, a lapidarium was also created to house the historical tombstones of Nový Jičín residents, especially of German nationality, whose descendants were forcibly removed after World War II and whose graves began to deteriorate. In the lapidarium there are also iron crosses of mainly Czech, Polish and German soldiers killed in the First World War. In the central area of the cemetery there is a memorial to the victims of World War I, which is a cultural monument.
Near the ceremonial hall you can see the sculpture "Memorial of the Fallen" by the native of Nový Jičín, sculptor Leopold Hohl, who is also the author of several tombstones here.

The location of the above objects is marked on the map below.
